Spatial Weight Matrices

چکیده
Each nonnegative matrix, ( : , 1,.., ) ij W w i j n , is a possible spatial weight matrix summarizing spatial relations between n spatial units. Here each spatial weight, ij w , typically reflects the “spatial influence” of unit j on unit i . Following standard convention, we here exclude “self influence” by assuming that 0 ii w for all 1,.., i n (so that W has a zero diagonal). The following is a list of spatial weight matrices often used in practice. See also the list on p.261 of [BG].

The Impact of Weight Matrices on Parameter Estimation and Inference: a Case Study of Binary Response Using Land Use Data
This paper develops two new models and evaluates the impact of using different weight matrices on parameter estimates and inference in three distinct spatial specifications for discrete response. These specifications rely on a conventional, sparse, inverse-distance weight matrix for a spatial auto-regressive probit (SARP), a spatial autoregressive approach where the weight matrix
متن کاملSpatial Weights: Constructing Weight-Compatible Exchange Matrices from Proximity Matrices
Exchange matrices represent spatial weights as symmetric probability distributions on pairs of regions, whose margins yield regional weights, generally well-specified and known in most contexts. This contribution proposes a mechanism for constructing exchange matrices, derived from quite general symmetric proximity matrices, in such a way that the margin of the exchange matrix coincides with th...
متن کاملConditional Autoregressions with Doubly Stochastic Weight Matrices
A conditional spatial autoregression (CAR) specifies dependence via a weight matrix. Employing a doubly stochastic weight matrix allows users to interpret the CAR prediction rule as a semiparametric prediction rule and as BLUP with smoothing in addition to other benefits. We examine standard and doubly stochastic weight matrices in the context of an illustrative data set to demonstrate feasibil...
متن کاملTheoretically Consistent Temporal Ordering Specification in Spatial Hedonic Pricing Models Applied to the Valuation of Aircraft Noise
Incorporating spatial econometric tools in Hedonic Pricing (HP) models for environmental valuation has become the standard approach in the literature. The effect of house prices on other house prices is taken into account and usually measured by distance or contiguity in spatial weight matrices. Disaggregate house sale datasets are composed from observations each at a specific location and time...
متن کامل2SIV Estimation of A Dynamic Spatial Panel Data Model with Endogenous Spatial Weight Matrices
The spatial panel data model is a standard tool for analyzing data with both spatial correlation and dynamic dependences among economic units. Conventional estimation methods rely on the key assumption that the spatial weight matrix is strictly exogenous, which would likely be violated in some empirical applications where spatial weights are determined by economic factors. This paper studies th...
